What we do:

Fiber Planners has specialized in designing fiber outside plant systems for electric utilities and municipalities since its founding by Denise Frey in 1993. These clients have unique and more technically challenging requirements than other fiber users such as cable TV companies or telcos. We're a small (less than 10 people), very productive consulting organization focused on getting our clients' network expansions up and running quickly -- and smoothly.

Who we are -- our senior staff

Denise Marcel Frey
President and founder
Denise, with just a handful of other people, pioneered and developed the use of all-dielectric self-supporting fiber optic cable in North America in the late 1980s at what was then Superior Optics. Probably half the large utilities in the U.S. have ADSS fiber systems she helped design, either while at Superior or at Fiber Planners.

Denise has been in the fiber optic industry since 1983 and has worked for such firms as Siecor (now Corning Cable Systems), Pirelli, Photon Kinetics, SpecTran, Superior Optics and Alcoa Fujikura Ltd. Her positions range from applications and research/development engineering to production supervisor and national sales manager. She started Fiber Planners in July, 1993 to fill the information gap between the cable manufacturers and the power utility client. Denise has a B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering from Miami University (Ohio). She has taught fiber optic seminars for Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA) and the UTC membership. Denise is an active member of the Optical Society of America and the IEEE as a member of the IEEE-P1222 working group for ADSS cable specifications and the IEEE-P524 working group for overhead conductor installation specifications. Denise is based in our main office in Greenville, SC.

Rodney Frey
Vice President
Rodney has been in the fiber optic industry since 1984 and has held engineering positions with Siecor (now Corning Cable Systems) and Alcoa Fujikura Ltd. He developed the cable design programs for several cable manufacturers and is an authority on ADSS sag and tension program design. Rodney has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. (He's also the only person we know that can solve any Rubik's cube in five minutes.) Rodney is based in our main office in Greenville, SC.

Al Bonnyman
General Manager/Senior Planner
Al has been in the fiber optic industry since 1985 and has held engineering, marketing and management positions with Siecor (now Corning Cable Systems), Photon Kinetics and Brugg Telecom. He also founded Powermetrix Corporation in 1994 with the development of a new combined power quality and meter verification instrument. On the fuels side of the utility business, Al served as a director of Blue Diamond Coal Company until its acquisition by James River Coal Co. in 1998. Al has a B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton and an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia’s Darden School. He also has graduate training in nuclear engineering from the U.S. Navy, where he served as a nuclear submarine officer. Al is based in our Rome, Georgia office.

It's not just experience -- it's attitude!

At Fiber Planners, when our utility clients need us, we're there -- wherever, whenever and however they need us. When a hurricane has hit a client, we've been right behind it. When a vendor has defaulted, we've been there with alternate suppliers. Whether it's supervising an installation crew in an Iowa blizzard or a union crew in inner city New York, Fiber Planners has been there -- even in Starr, South Carolina troubleshooting a fiber problem at 3 a.m.

There's not a fiber problem we won't tackle -- call us up and give us yours.

Fiber Planners is the team you'll want in your corner when it comes to fiber optics at your utility.
